Your first semester of law school is rarely what you imagine before entering it. In this video, I talk about the transformation that comes with entering a new academic environment alongside ambitious students from diverse backgrounds, encountering unfamiliar perspectives and developing the habits of legal thinking and advocacy. I also walk through the practical parts of law school—how integrated programmes such as B.A. LL.B. and B.B.A. LL.B. are structured, how the CGPA and grading system work, how to navigate mid-semester and end-semester examinations, and where mooting, college fests and other activities fit into the experience. Along the way, I also question some common myths about law school and share what the first semester actually feels like.

MARGIN NOTE / 01

Everyone used to being “the best” arrives at once.

Law school can feel like an improbable assembly of people who were high performers in entirely different rooms before entering the same one. That makes the place competitive, occasionally intimidating and also deeply interesting. You encounter unusually strong personalities, conflicting ideas of ambition and people who are accustomed to being heard. Learning to exist in that mosaic is part of the education too.

MARGIN NOTE / 02

The first-semester canon event: believing you are already behind.

During the first few weeks, everybody seems to be reading more, applying earlier and understanding law school faster than you. Almost everyone is privately making the same comparison. The person you think you are falling behind may be looking at somebody else and thinking exactly that. You are entering a room full of motivated people who are all trying to establish an advantage at once. The feeling is real; the conclusion usually is not.

What law schools are broadly required to teach

The Bar Council of India’s Rules of Legal Education and Schedule II provide the compulsory law-course framework. Universities may organise, name and schedule courses differently; the same paper is not necessarily taught in the same semester everywhere.
